The tithe, or the first 10% of our income, is a consistent concept throughout the Scriptures. It existed before Moses wrote down the Law in the Old Testament, and it continues on in and through the New Testament. But why?
The Old Testament book of Malachi says it something like this:
“Will you rob God? That’s what you’re doing when you withhold what belongs to Him—your tithes and offerings. And because of it, you're missing out on the fullness of His blessing.
But if you bring the whole tithe into His house—giving faithfully to support His work—He promises to provide more than enough.
He will open the windows of heaven and pour out abundance in ways you can’t contain.
He’ll protect what you have, make what you build last, and cause others to see the difference His blessing makes in your life.
Put Him to the test—and see what He will do.”
That's a solid paraphrase of Malachi 3:8-12. The bottom line is honoring God with the first part of our income lets Him bless all the rest of it! Ask anyone who's tried it both ways, and they will tell you some version of "I found out a blessed 90% goes a lot further than a cursed 100%!"
